hiya
i have a edward lorikeet who was previously rescued before coming to his forever home here.
he was originally with an owner who didnt realise he didnt eat seed and that his diet should consist of nectar and pollen as well as fruit and veg, a kind gent rescued him and built his health back up (he was almost dead when the gent found him and had lost a considerable amount of breast feathers) and he came to us because he didnt get on with the gents lory( the chap didnt ever hear sparky speak in 3 months and we soon figured he was calling himself a boy and the lory was male hence why they didnt get on).
i was asked to go and meet him and i can honestly say it was love at first sight for both of us, he came straight to my shoulder and snuggled in and then proceeded to say 'come on then','hello' and 'theres a good boy'. he had never spoken before-the gent was so happy that both me and sparky hit it off and since then sparky has been my best friend.
he is starting to grow back his feathers slowly but surely and is being introduced to different fruit and veg to determine what he likes(he had never tasted fruit until he was rescued!).
although it sound cute there has been some hard times , he can sometimes have grumpy days where he will peck at u and he does try to clean my teeth given a chance (we r slowly conquering that one cuz it hurts when he nips ya gums lol), he will now come to u when he is ready and chooses who he likes, he still speaks but only very rarely when hes flirting or showing off.lol we have had episodes of screeching and biting u when u go near his food,- so lorikeets although they can be lovely and im sure that in time we will know and trust each other better there are things to consider.

plus points: sweet natures, fascinating to watch and interact with, comical, very loving when they want to, food easily available for correct diets, they like to bath(hes fallen in love with a lonely female cockatiel! and we are still learning more,

bad points: it takes a while to build a trust they can be quite shy (especially edwards), they do have a nasty nip when they attack u,they can be loud but not too loud(he calls me when i leave the room), there is a strict diet of things they must have like nectar/pollen which can be bought in powder form from pet shops but has to be mixed a few times a day in hot weather, they need space to fly about (sparky for example will rarely go in his cage and gets distressed when u try)poop- this is very watery/runny because of their diet and also they kinda squirt it and it goes everywhere including up walls, because they eat fresh fruit etc this has to be changed regulalrly as fruit doesnt last long in open air, there are probbaly more things to consider im thinking off the top of my head

i would encourage anybody that is looking for a bird to think of all these things before evnturing into buying a bird - ask advice , research the breed, talk to ppl who own the breed u are considering but please make sure that u have enough information before u make ur decison it may just stop them going through a similar circumstance to sparky , i am determined to make the rest of sparkys life the happiest it can be , but had he not been found in time he wouldnt be with us today and it would have been his owner giving him a slow death, could u have a concience with that??

sparky today- he is gaining more trust every day and we are building a huge relationship nips bites and screeches aside i love him very dearly and am so glad to share my life with him and my other animals
